With Bulgaria in My Heart

On March 3rd, a fascinating event took place, dedicated to the history of Bulgaria. It might have been perceived as a competition, but no one seemed to think about winning. It was as if everyone was united in a shared purpose—to honor Bulgaria’s history together and tell its story through songs, poems, and recitations. Their words and voices reflected the depth of their emotions, as if they longed to be a part of that very history, and they wanted us to be part of it too. The entire experience was truly inspiring.

For me, it all felt very familiar because similar events are held in Georgia as well. It was as if the shared pain of both nations was embodied in this single event, where people of all ages dressed in traditional clothing, carried flags, and reminded the world—if only for a little while—of their past and where they came from. Despite the language barrier, it was easy to understand what these children were feeling, to see the sparks in their eyes, to witness how proud the host was of each and every performer. And in those moments, the audience quietly followed along, because they knew exactly what their children and ancestors had once experienced. They too had once stood on that stage as children, reciting those same poems and singing those same songs.

In the end, the event left a lasting impression. Although we were there simply to film, and it was exhausting, in that moment, as I listened, I too became part of the audience. I too clapped with the same emotions they did. In the end, every performer received a symbolic medal and a gift, signifying that patriotism is rewarded equally for all. For many of them, that stage was the beginning—just as it has been in Georgia. That is why we, as Georgians, love dance, song, and poetry. Through these three things, we can easily convey our emotions to the world and showcase the greatness of our nation.
