Stara Zagora: History & Youth
Stara Zagora is a beautiful city in central Bulgaria, known for its calm atmosphere and rich history. Because it is located in the heart of the country, it connects many important regions and plays a key role in Bulgaria’s cultural and economic life. The city is also home to an active Youth Center, which supports young people with events, workshops, and social projects. As ESC volunteers from Turkiye and Egypt, visiting Stara Zagora gave us the chance to explore a place where history, modern life, and youth activities come together in a very inspiring way.
The Streets and Urban Feel of the City
One of the first things we noticed in Stara Zagora was its wide and well-organized streets. The city layout is very clean, open, and easy to walk around, which makes exploring really enjoyable. Everything feels structured and peaceful at the same time. The long boulevards, green areas, and quiet neighborhoods give the city a comfortable atmosphere that makes you feel safe and relaxed while walking around.
Ancient History and Cultural Landmarks
Stara Zagora has a very long and rich history. In ancient times, the city was known as Augusta Traiana, one of the most important centers in the region of Ancient Thrace. Even today, you can still see many signs of this old civilization around the city. There are also beautiful religious and historical buildings, such as an impressive Orthodox church and a historic mosque near the city center. These landmarks show the mix of cultures that shaped Stara Zagora through the centuries. When you walk around the city, you can feel how old history and modern life exist together in a peaceful and natural way.

Museums, Old Buildings, and Green Spaces
Stara Zagora has several interesting museums that help visitors understand the city’s past and culture. Stara Zagora has several important museums and historical sites. The Regional History Museum shows over 100,000 artifacts from the Neolithic period to modern times, including Roman mosaics and Thracian finds. The Neolithic Dwellings Museum preserves two of Europe’s oldest houses, where visitors can see pottery, stone tools, and early human kitchens. The Museum of Religions, in an old mosque, displays the city’s cultural and religious diversity. Around the city, you can also find ancient Roman remains from Augusta Traiana, such as a forum, public buildings, and mosaic floors from the 4th century AD.
The city also has many historical structures, such as old churches, traditional houses, and restored ruins that reflect different periods of Bulgarian history. One of the most relaxing places in Stara Zagora is Ayazmo Park, a large and peaceful green area on a hill. It is perfect for walking, spending time in nature, or enjoying the fresh air. Inside the park, there is also a small zoo, which makes it a fun place for families, visitors, and young people who want to explore something different.
