During the classes of the second graders with class teacher Mrs. Savova at “N. Y. Vaptsarov,” PS the world’s largest global program for sustainable schools – “Eco-Schools” – was presented as a guest. The meetings are conducted by volunteers from the associations “YDCMA” and “United Avangard Artist,” who come from Turkey, Bulgaria, and Egypt.

The volunteers are in Bulgaria under the “European Solidarity Corps” program and are part of the Eco Academy team, held at the base of the “Green Europe” Eco Center – Srednogorovo village, under the project “Eco Academy 2024–2025” within the Erasmus+ program.

Since last year, YDCMA has been part of the “green circle” of the Eco-Schools Program through the creation of an Eco Committee, which also includes students from OU “N. Y. Vaptsarov,” Kazanlak. The program begins in the classroom and expands into the community, engaging young people in learning through action.

The greatest achievement of the program is that it creates generations of sustainably and ecologically conscious young people. They build habits and behavioral models that they carry throughout their lives and pass on, inspiring future generations to be part of positive change.

The implementation of policies for education for sustainable development through the Eco-Schools Program is internationally recognized by UNEP and UNESCO.

Today, the program involves 59,000 schools in 68 countries worldwide. In Bulgaria, over 80 schools and kindergartens are included, along with more than 900 teachers and 32,000 students from 17 municipalities.

The Eco-Schools Program was created in 1994 in response to the need for young people to be actively involved in finding solutions to environmental challenges and sustainable development at the local level – a priority already established at the UN Conference on Environment and Development in 1992.
