“How the young people have fun in my country?” – Joao Rocha
When I’m introducing myself to foreigners, or to people that live in a different country from mine, the first thing they tell me is – “ah yes, Cristiano Ronaldo”, so yeah, I’m Portuguese. In Portugal we, young people, have fun like in almost every west Europe country…
During the week after school/work we go out to a bar or to the park, and we drink coffee and/or beer and we stay there for a couple of hours chatting, nowadays we chat less because everyone is always in theirs phones, but that’s a worldwide phenomenon.
During the summer, when the temperature is bearable we go to the football field and we can stay there all afternoon playing football or basketball. We also like to play carts, we play games like –“Sueca”; “sobe-e-desce” and in my small city we have a card game called “ximbirra”, it’s actually a local game so you can only find it in my town. It’s actually a really strange game because it involves beans, coffee beans and bottle caps…
We also play money games that involve carts, the most famous is the classic Poker, but we also play a game called “sete e meio” for money. Some people play a game called Dominó, it involves black or white ceramic pieces but it’s mostly played by old people… We also like to play computer or PlayStation against each other, now it’s mostly online but we used to have Lan Parties in some of the guy’s house. When we invite someone to our house, like for dinner or lunch we play board games or just discuss football.
When we get bored of these traditional games, we play darts. Now it’s getting really popular in Portugal to go to a bar and play darts against our friends or play it online versus people all around the world, actually one of the champions from the online game is s friend of mine and neighbor.
On the weekends we go out to a nightclub where we stay until late at night, the usual is to be there till 2 a.m. or 5 a.m., must clubs have a DJ that mixes some mainstream electronic music. When we don’t feel like going to the club, because it’s always full of drunk people that sometimes become violent, we out in the woods or a lake and we camp there, we need some permission but most people don’t have one.
During the summer, mainly in august, we go to festivals. The biggest one in Portugal is called Meo Sudoeste, and the second is called RFM Somni, last year 195 thousand people went to Meo Sudoeste. They are mostly an EDM festival (Electronic Dance Music) but sometimes rappers go there and some bands.
